Marblehead races under the "fleet" system, in which all boats are launched
at the same time and the time spent turning at the leeward end is "on the
clock." The first boat of a six-boat race to return to the starting
point gets five points, the second four, and so forth. Here the boats
are being readied for a start.
The fleet starts. No collisions this time, which is a bit of a wonder.

Another Start.
The boats are off and all the skippers except Ben Martin have started to race their boats to the port shore.
Air was dead at the windward end of the pond. Ned Lakeman waits more or less patiently for his boat to drift within range of his pole.
Three skippers turn at the windward end. Although it looks like a timed start, in fact it was just by chance that the boats reached the end at the same time; they are essentially tied at this point. The skipper closest to the camera is Graham Reeves, who along with Russell Potts provided magnificent hospitality on our England trip. Note the "K" preface to the reigstration number, indicating a UK boat.
